The Valor Honor Awards recognize the courageous actions of our first responders in Lawrence, Douglas County.

The Police, Fire and Medical, Public Safety, Sheriff and Troopers participating in the Valor First Responder Awards program nominate members of their department for awards.  A selection committee will then review all of the nominations before choosing this year’s honorees.

Gold Valor Award

The highest award in recognition of an act involving extreme personal risk which is clearly above and beyond the call of duty. Because of the high degree of bravery, judgment and circumstances required to warrant presentation of a Gold Valor Award, this award may not be presented every year. In years when the Gold Valor Award is presented, not more than one Gold Valor Award shall be awarded to each service except in the most extenuating circumstances.

Silver Valor Award

To be awarded in recognition of acts involving great personal risk, although not qualifying for a gold medal, which are clearly above and beyond the call of duty.

Bronze Valor Award

To be awarded in recognition of acts involving unusual personal risk beyond that which should be expected while performing in the usual responsibilities. Bronze medals may also be awarded to those who demonstrate unusual judgment, zeal or ingenuity during an emergency situation when such act is beyond that normally expected in the performance of duty.

Meritorious Valor Award

To be awarded in recognition of acts involving personal risk or demonstrating unusual judgement, zeal or ingenuity not normally expected in the performance of duties.

Valor Lifesaving Award

Awarded in recognition of acts taken in a life-threatening situation where an individual’s life is in jeopardy.

CPR/AED Lifesaving Award

To be awarded in recognition of acts taken involving the use of CPR/AED in a life-threatening situation where an individual’s life is in jeopardy.

First Graders for First Responders Award

First graders from Langston Hughes, Corpus Christi and the Boys & Girls Club Summer Program participated in an art contest to show their appreciation for first responders. The winning entry is the cover for the event program.
